Derby Basics
So you’ve been invited to watch your first roller derby bout. Here are the basics you need to know to follow all the action!
So what is a "Bout"?
A bout is broken into two 30 minute periods. Each period is made up of jams lasting up to two minutes. The team with the most points at the end wins.
The Players
Each team has four Blockers and one Jammer on the track. Blockers form the pack, while Jammers aim to score points.
The Jam
Jammers start behind the jam line, they aim to become the lead jammer by legally passing all Blockers. The lead Jammer can strategically end the jam when they choose, or it can run the full 2 minutes. Blockers aim to stop the oppossing Jammer from scoring points, and assisting their own Jammer to get through the pack.
Scoring:
Jammers earn points by legally passing opposing Blockers. They earn one point for each opposing blocker passed after completing one full lap around the track.
Penalties:
Skaters can be penalized for illegal actions, resulting in time in the penalty box, leaving their team short-handed.
